Sixteen persons were killed in 22 road accidents in Lagos within the just-concluded festive season. The Chief of State Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr. Chidi Nkwonta, disclosed this while briefing the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the matter.
56 persons sustained various degrees of injuries in separate accidents that occurred from December 19, 2013, and January 1, 2014.
2,206 offenders for 2,443 traffic offences were apprehended in the end-of-the-year special patrol on Lagos-Ibadan, Lagos-Abeokuta, Lekki-Epe and Badagry expressways.
Although the news of dozens of unfortunate deaths is saddening, Mr. Nkwonta added that the number was lower if compared to previous years. He attributed this welcome development to the success of the "Operation Zero Tolerance," which was introduced to reduce road crashes.
"Unfortunately, we had the first major crash on Dec. 21, along Lekki-Epe route, which claimed nine lives. Apart from that, we had a few other crashes that claimed seven," the FRSC head said.
The Sector Commander urged the road users to obey traffic regulations, stressing that the special patrol would continue operation till Jan. 15.
Exceeding the speed limit, dangerous driving, and overloading were the major offences committed by drivers and other road users that resulted in the untimely deaths.
