A lady's box that fell on Tuesday in front of Dandal Police Divisional Headquarters in Maiduguri, Borno State, was mistaken for a bomb. The police officers abandoned their weapons and fled the scene.
Dandal Way highway leads to the traditional ruler, Shehu of Borno's, residence.
Apparently, the travel box fell off the trunk of a taxi, and for a couple of hours armed police officers abandoned their headquarters while waiting for the anti-bomb squad to arrive.
The incident coincided with the visit of the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 12, Muhammed Gana to address police officers at the Headquarters.
Things got an unexpected turn when a woman on a tricycle got to the scene with an intention to retrieve the box. Agitated police officers tried to stop her, but the woman said it wasn't a bomb but actually her luggage.
She said she returned upon realising part of her belongings was missing, so she traced the way to the missing travel box.
However, in spite of the explanations, the police officers were still in two minds about approaching the box. The woman eventually went to pick her box which, as it turned out, contained personal items.
Tuesday's scare was the second in four days after an empty laptop bag dropped off a tricycle on the Lagos Bridge on Saturday. It will also be recalled that last week, at least 43 people lost their lives as a bomb exploded in Maiduguri.
