Tragedy struck in Ovom community, a suburb of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, weekend, after an 11-year-old Indigene of the community was stabbed to death by an orange seller.
The 18-year-old orange seller has been identified as Glory, an Indigene of Isoko community in Delta State.
Spokesman of the state police command, Mr. Alex Akhigbe confirmed the development.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victim identified as Comfort had earlier last Wednesday disrespected the orange seller by allegedly using vulgar and disrespectful language against her intention to send her on an errand.
“On Thursday, the deceased girl was also reported to have come across the orange seller while displaying her oranges and stood before the wares. Attempts by the orange seller to ward-off the kid resulted in another altercation and alleged insults on her parents,” the witness narrated.
It was gathered that the orange seller carried out her threat to stab the 11-year-old girl if she fails to move away from where she was selling. She eventually stabbed her in the stomach which led to her death.
Commenting on the development, the Chairman of the state chapter of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Chief Nengi James condemned the act and describing it as a reflection of the deteriorating values in the society and urged the the state government and the state House of Assembly to act quickly and pass into law the Child Rights Bill, saying, “if such a Bill is passed into law, parents will learn to ensure that their kids are in school and such incidence of violence against the Nigerian child will reduce.”
