Reports reaching us indicate that a new Army Division is to be deployed to the Niger Delta region. The 9,000 strong Division would protect Nigeria's economic and territorial assets in the South-South, as well as prevent threats to the nation's boundaries with Cameroon, and in the Gulf of Guinea area.
There is a similar 7 Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, which was set up to curb terrorists' activities and cross-border crimes.
The development allegedly follows intelligence reports of a new group of militant youths that is being mobilised to carry out destabilisation activities.
According to Army sources, the plan of placing the new division (with possible headquarters in Port Harcourt) to the Niger Delta region was suggested by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika, and is backed by Service Chiefs.
