Tamil Nadu, India
For over two years, four Nigerians have been confined illegally in the camp for Sri Lankan refugees in Tamil Nadu, India. This story was sent by our readers to info@naij.com. In it, they describe the misfortunes that befell them.
The four of them were falsefully accused of a crime while staying in India and sent to a prison. They submitted their international passports along with 2 local sureties as bail conditions.
They all have valid passports, visas, and residential permit to stay as students as of the time of the arrest.
They were released in late April, 2012; however, the local police arrested them again and took them to a special refugee camp for Sri Lankan refugees.
Despite the Undertaking letter given to the Government by the Nigeria embassy in New Delhi, the four Nigerians are yet to be released from the camp.
The conditions there are dehumanising and unhygienic. The camp is full of dangerous reptiles and insects. The Nigerians say they are being subjected to "mental tortures," and their families suffer, too. For instance, wife of one of the prisoners had given birth, and he has not seen her or the child, while the Indian police is aware of this fact.
They decry the fact that the Tamil Nadu government denies them freedom the Court gave them, as they were all governed under the International law.
The detained Nigerians say this is violation of fundamental human rights and pure racism on the part of Indian authorities, as in Nigeria, Indians are treated with due respect.
The four of them desperately seek for help from fellow Nigerians. They can be contacted via e-mail: nijaatcamp@gmail.com
The Indian camp where the four Nigerians are being unlawfully kept.
Over 15,000 Nigerians are detained in prisons abroad, according to the latest report by Mr. Abdulazeez Dankano, the Director, Consular and Immigration Services, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. And these are just the official figures, meaning that there probably are thousands of other fellow Nigerians who suffered a fate similar to the one described in the letter by our readers. We hope that this information will be noticed, and appropriate measures taken!
