A source at the Kano State Government House, who confided in our correspondent in Abuja on Monday said, there was apprehension in government circles as the officials were billed to depart Kano for another round of interrogation by operatives of the commission in Abuja within the week.
The affected officials are Accountant-General of the State, Danjuma Mahmoud, the Commissioners for Finance and Budget and Economic Planning, Messrs Yusuf Danbatta and Abdulahi Gaya respectively.
The three government officials were picked up a week after operatives of the commission arrested and interrogated the principal officers of the Kano State House of Assembly in relation with the amendment of the budget to the tune of N28bn.
Those arrested were the Speaker, Gambo Salla; the Deputy Speaker, Isyaku Ali Danja; the Chief Whip; the Deputy Chief Whip, Majority Leader; Deputy Majority Leader; the Minority Leader; Deputy Minority Leader, Chairman House Committee on Appropriation; Chairman House Committee on Finance and the Clerk of the House.
The source said that the three members of the State Executive Council, who were released after interrogation by the EFCC shortly before Christmas, were asked to report to the commission’s headquarters for further questioning this week.
It was learnt that the three commissioners were released on the condition they would produce necessary documents to back the statements they made at the EFCC.
The Head of Media of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said in a telephone conversation with our correspondent on Monday that the interrogated officials of the Kano government had since been released and had returned to Kano.
However, when our correspondent called his line an hour after to comment on the revelation from Kano that three officials of the state government were being expected at the commission’s head office in Abuja, the calls did not go through.
