A 27-year-old man, Bello Afeez, has been arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court for allegedly attempting to kill two police officers.
The police said Afeez, a vagabond, was engaged in a street fight at Oshodi Street, Lagos Island area of Lagos, when some police officers tried to intervene.
The police said the defendant, with some others who were still at large, turned against the cops and assaulted them.
Among the injured were two police corporals- Ajayi Awomilusi and Philip Omogbai- who were cut with cutlasses and broken bottles.
Afeez was subsequently arrested and arraigned on Wednesday on three counts of attempted murder and assault.
The three counts read in part, “That you, Bello Afeez, with others now at large on December 23, 2013 around 12.30am at Oshodi Street, Lagos Island, in the Lagos Magisterial District did conspire together to commit felony to wit attempted murder.
“That you did attempt to murder one Corporal Ajayi Awomilusi, and one Corporal Philip Omogbai, by attacking them with cutlasses and broken bottles.”
The police prosecutor, Inspector Ignatius Okeke, said the offences were punishable under sections 409, 228 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
Okeke added that one of the police officers was still in the hospital receiving treatments for his injuries.
The defendant however pleaded not guilty to the charges and elected summary trial.
His defence counsel asked for his bail in liberal terms.
The magistrate, Mrs Y.R Pinheiro, admitted him to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
The matter was adjourned till February 3, 2014.
