It has been reported that gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect attacked Bama, a town 135km from Borno state capital, Maiduguri.
According to Premium Times, the invasion took place in the early hours of Wednesday.
The casualty figure is still unknown.
There has not been yet an official confirmation from the police or the military.
Vanguard has reported earlier today that there was heavy exchange of gunfire between them and security operatives in Bama.
"Many may have been killed because the attack was launched when the residents were fast asleep," a Maiduguri resident whose relative contacted him from Bama said.
On Tuesday, the Presidency stated that the Nigerian armed forces were up to the task of fully containing the Boko Haram "guerrilla warfare".
It also faulted the comments made by Governor of Borno state Kashim Shettima who had said that Boko Haram was better armed that the Nigerian military.
It will also be recalled that one of the latest attack occurred on Saturday when Boko Haram invaded Izghe Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State leaving 146 people dead.
